Pissed Off 7P Employee: I understand what you\'re going through. I worked at a store in a tourist area, mostly closing and we\'ve always closed with just 2 people. Depending on who the shift was, the other person basically did everything. We used to break down pumps two hours before closing to get the majority of dishes out of the way and closed down the pastry case an hour before closing. But the DM made a suprise visit one night and took pictures of everything and changed pre-closing and closing duties. Now pre-closers just have to clean the bathroom, take out the trash and mop behind the bar. Closers have to mop the entire store, which had the carpet removed after this change, and break down pumps and close the pastry case 10 mins. after the posted closing sign. You know with the whole \"10 minute rule.\" Believe me there were shortcuts, I kept them sanitary, unlike another store where the mochas are filled to the brim and are left out of the fridge overnight so they don\'t have to wash anything. starbucks likes to save money any way possible and that\'s what your manager is doing. I wish you luck though.

Well, I've been working at a SB in Seattle for almost 3 months now, and I'm starting to see how truely candid the people are on the site are. What you all are saying are very true and I've experienced them as well, so I sympathize with all you poor college kids working this crappy job. I, personnally, can't wait to finish colllege in the next year in a half so I can get a "real" job, and not this BS slave labor. Recently my new store manager decided that she was going to change the way we close our store (we were already the cleanest store in the district), and thus she created a long checklist that had to be done on a nightly basis. Prior to that we were getting out on time with 2 closers and a shift supervisor, but now it's gotten worse. It's not just the increased workload, but it's also the reduction in the amount of closers. Since I'm a full time college student, I'm stuck with closing most of the week, so it's gotten increasingly stressful. Ever since our new store manager started doing scheduling, she has only allowed 1 closer and 1 shift supervisor to work, and for most of the day we're stuck with only 3-4 partners, which is extremely understaffed considering the volume we're doing (Downtown Seattle). The checklist that is being utilize now consist of rediculous things like "clean floor drains", "windex trash cans," etc. We already have things to do during closing (or rather, just "me"), so why understaff us? My question is, What the hell do the morning people do???!!! Don't they do sh*t? Closing is very physical work, and I don't ever go home sweaty, and worst of all 15-30 mins late now. With school and all that, I still end up getting home around 11pm and having classes earlier the next morning! Bastards! Even worse, one of my shift supervisor, whom hasn't even received training, is on the "Action Plan" now due to the fact we get out late to finish the tasks, and now he faces the possibility of being fired! What the hell?! We bust our asses all night from 5pm-11pm, non-stop, but it's still not good enough for them? F*ck SB! This is not worth it! They can take this job and shove it!

many people enjoy the "high" they get from their morning cup of coffee, myself included. the addictive quality of caffeine is no secret to people. the body is always seeking what is called homeostasis which is a natural balance of fuction and psysiology. when someone gets the buzz from coffee, it causes a disturbance in this balance and the body compensates by bringing the high down. this is called detoxification (indicated by the well known headache). then over time the body adjusts its balance to compensate for the overstimulation similar to the way people develop a tolerance for alcohol. now, one needs to have more caffine to feel, not high, but just normal. stimulants affect the heart, alter vascular flow, and overstimulate digestive and glandular activity. this screws up the one's normal energy balance, which eventualy cause system failure and glandular meltdown. most people agree that starbucks brews their coffee stronger than most, thus adding to the caffeine content. why would they do this? maybe a look at their name and logo is a good answer. the woman in the center of the circle is a siren. according to dictionary.com a siren, in greek mythology, is "One of a group of sea nymphs who by their sweet singing lured mariners to destruction on the rocks surrounding their island." Starbucks, a word that could be loosely interpreted as meaning 'top dollar' rather than the first mate from Melville's Moby Dick, decided to choose a siren as its corporate identity. Perhaps this means they aren't denying the fact that this corporate siren, this corporate drug dealer, is luring their customers with promises of Legendary Service, strong coffee, and a high with an eventual demise. Yo: I know what you mean about the espresso macchiato v. cappuccino crap. We have a customer who comes in and orders a venti americano with no water because he insists that it is cheaper than ordering a quad espresso. We have told him numerous times that we do not charge for hot water and have even shown him this by doing a price check on both drinks. May I end up livin' in a van down by the river, if those two drinks don't cost the exact same friggin' price! AYe, yie, yie! I think in my next life, I'm going to be a friggin' know-it-all customer who clearly knows more than the employees that are trained to work there! Only 12 more days...

My favorite drink order : "Yeah, I'll have a large black coffee with cream and sugar." Won't even go into how moronic this is. The illiterate customer: "Yeah, how much is your cappuccino?" DUH...it's right in front of you, clear as day! "How much is it with sales tax?" Do I look like your damn math teacher? Figure it out your own self! Oh, and my favorite: "Yes, I'll have a caramel Mochiatto" Do you all ever get this? When someone says "Moe-kee-ya-toe"? Last I checked, an "A" never sounds like an "O" (except for the town of Quahog on "Family Guy")

We have moronic customers too. They order a frap, and then go to the endof the bar and grab a hot drink (which is obviously not theirs... duh) and walk away and come back like 5 mins later (due to slow working brain cells) and say after having drunk mostof it... 'this is hot?.. is this mine?' AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaah!

Haha, I think the people who complain about this sight are funny. It\'s a free country- who says you have to read it??? i laugh so hard at the complaints about customers!! i work at a store where a regular customer orders a quad grande dry capuccino, but insists that we ring it as a triple espresso macchiato cause he doesnt think foam counts as milk (and he knows we\'ll probably just dump the fourth shot out anyway)! this pisses us off because WE all have to pay the regular price for stuff if we come in...it just makes him look like a cheapskate cause he never tips and he gets like four a day....plus he\'s a sleezy jerk who hits on EVERYONE!

I am so happy to have found this site! I was so happy to be working there at first because it all seemed great but it went downhill once summer(03) hit and we got slammed with frappuccino's and shaking those teas and why do we need to skake ice coffee's? And now every time my DM comes in there seem to be more rules and and why do we now have to clean drains on a daily basis? Loved reading everyone's comments about how to deal with cell phone people. And I have the added bonus of working at a drive thru store. As for the customers....well some are nice but the majority are just rude. Like today a couple order two venti americano's with SFV and I asked if they wanted it hot or iced since we have moron's who don't know how to order so I asked and I got "they're hot, if I wanted them iced I would have said so"....grr....

WOW, Enforcer man I can hardley believe that your managers and DMs would back you up against customer crap. How lucky for you. In the SGV its just the opposit. Customers can do what ever they want right or wrong. So I just say yes to every thing. You want a refill with that ripped off cup, sure. You want to complain that you dont want to pay the price of a VL because you only want one pump of vanilla its not SB policy, but sure. Tips havent been a problem in my store I dont no how I would react to that one. However, I know from past personal experience that if my reaction is unfavorable and the customer complained it just may be the last straw and I would be fighting SB for my unemployment.

Give it time "Crazy Crazy", give it time, soon you too will be turned to the dark side, or "the truth" however you want to look at it. Either that or you dont mind having your dignity and respect walked on, which if thats the case, I pity you. I really enjoyed Starbucks when I first started working, and from time to time, still enjoy SOME aspects, but overall I would say my experience has been negative. My manager actually asked me about moving up to Asst. Manager after I became a shift. Guess what? I'm still a SS and why? Because you couldnt pay me enough (which they dont already) to put up with the SH*T. However, everyone is entitled to their OWN opinion. If anything, I'm glad that nothing negative has happened to you in your experience with employment at Starbucks.

You're a skinny latte! haha nah I'm playin. No personal attacks on you, but I just ran across the website, and since I work there I had to check it out. I know not everyone likes the same things, but I LOVE the coffee and the work environment so I'm gonna keep on loving it! Keep on hating it thats fine with me, but why bash it so much? Just out of curiousity do you not like the people that work there? or is it just the company and the coffee?

damn, enforcer, I wish I had said that. Luckily, at my new job, I keep my tips by my cash register ALWAYS (it is out of reach of the customers), I don't need cheap, scandalous people using my hard-earned money so they can drink their liquid candy bar. and Mr. Linder, I saw your website for Pony Espresso, VERY cute and clever :) Too bad I don't live in Oregon, I would be a brand new regular :)

A message to those customers who have thier grubby hands in the partners tip jar. I will TELL you once "not to touch the partners tips and it is not your money to touch". If you continue or give any lip it's NO DRINK for you with a kindly leave "NOW" or you deal with the police. I am famous in my district for this and I have the backing of several district managers. My fellow partners love me! One clown even called to complain to our district manager and that I was rude in telling him to not touch the tips. Our DM just said "well, since you touched money that did not belong to you in the first place you should not go back to that store or you will likely have to deal with the police if you do. Ahhh support from the DM level! All this enforcment from me...a 5 foot 6, 130 lbs male who won't take any crap from nobody especially arrogant cheap people who think the can take tip money. A few have learned the hard way that they can't! Hehe

I own a small mobile espresso service in Portland Oregon (ponyespresso.com). I have now had five (count 'em... 5) run-ins with St___ucks over the past few years. First, back in 1996 or so, a pinhead in a green apron flagged me down in front of his store as I drove past and "suggested" that I'd have better business a few blocks west of their location. I told him that I was happy on this boulevard, and if they didn't like it that perhaps they should move! A week later as I was serving one of my office complex stops, that same Gen-X geek was standing in line with my customers. He politely asked if he could have one of my business cards, so I gave him one. He looked at it, and then in front of all my customers, said; "You'll be hearing from our lawyers". I never did of hear from them of course, but he clearly was trying to intimidate me ... which he failed to do. Just a few months back, I was serving at a local outdoor event that I do every Saturday in the Portland area. St___ucks hired two people to count how many customers I served out there. Once they had determined that I had a substantial following, they approached the manager of the event and asked if she would be willing to dump me and allow them to take my place. She refused, so they went just outside the perimeter of the event and attempted to GIVE AWAY free Frappucinos to my regular customers as they approached the entrance! How slimy is that?!!?? Then, later that week, I received an e-mail from a man who said that he wished to remain anonymous. He wanted to buy my domain name for his computer software business (Pony Espresso... Software? I don't think so). I told him that it wasn't for sale at any price. He then tried to sweeten the deal by offering quite large sum of money, but ONLY if I agreed to change the name of my domain AND my business! He said, and I quote, "If you agree to enter into negotiations with us, I'll tell you who I really represent." It's just a guess, but I'd say that my old nemesis was trying to buy up my domain and business name in order to nullify my agreement with the even I serve on Saturdays. They would then have a legal right to challenge it too. But, it's been over ten years now, and I'm still here. I just heard today that they're setting up a fleet of mobile coffee trucks too ... we'll see how long I can hang on as they continue to destroy coffee shops around the world; mine will be one of the last!

Well, I am a partner that has been with the company 3 years now making a whooping $7.80 per hour! Try making it on your own with a kid for that!! Starbucks has more money than they know what to do with and they pay you pissy $$$. WTF?? The total pay package?? Whatever...I have seen better...Still a barista here no chance of advancing...maybe that's better, cuz it sux! Try being nice to customers that are rude and still we have to act so pleasant for crappy $$$. Want great employees?? Well, start paying up Starbucks...really....

Who really cares if customers order different save .30? This money isnt coming out of your pocket. Starbucks charges way too much and has tons of money so what is the big deal if people add their own milk at the condiments bar istead of ordering a latte?
