I just wanted to say in retrospect to my last posting that I feel violence or vandalism is a very last resort in any struggle. And for anyone reading this site; I'm sure that violence is not something the owner of this site condones either. Starbucks is a hip place in much of America's eyes. That is why people will spend their hard earned $ on things such as a Starbucks dictionary. An easy way to make Starbuck's hurt fiancially is to find a way to make it not hip. If you really feel strongly about it protest. Make it embarassing and create a feeling of shame for anyone to be seen going in the doors. ANd most of all don't buy YOUR coffee their.

Ma and Pa owned businesses have all but disappeared. It\'s horrible. Want a steak, we go to Outback. Want a pair of shoes, we go to the Footlocker or the Shoe Pavilion. Want a futon, we go to Ikea. Want a cup of coffee, we go to Starbucks.

My gripe with Starbucks is that it\'s cookie cutter. It\'s a great business model, but it\'s cookie cutter. What does that say about the world we live in? Hmmmm.

I found the coolest Coffee Shop in downtown Redmond (WA) called Victor\'s. It\'s this european man with a funny accent who owns it and he\'s totally down to earth. He roasts his own coffee and has the best home-made treats from breakfast to lunch. The world needs more little places like that with PERSONALITY and old hardwood floors.

Anyway, I thought you\'d like to know that Starbucks has pretty much phased out all traditional machines to where you had to load the ground beans in it and turn the handle tight to load the shot. Now they have these \"one button\" womders where the workers can just press a button for a \"grande americano\". I asked the girl in there why (ya, I still go into some when I\'m not near a Peets) and she said it\'s easier and it\'s better for the hands and arms. Weeding out tradition is no good.

A book...by golly...they have a book to help you learn and understand their language! Someone actually brought in this tiny booklet from Starsucks. It's filled with their language so YOU can order from them. YOU HAVE TO READ A BOOK BEFORE YOU CAN ORDER?!?! What is with this b/s?!?!? To order a cup of friggin coffee I have to study this book and speak their language. And in their book they contradict theirselves. How can a drink that is made entirely of espresso and FOAMED milk also be on ice? HOW? Someone please explain this. I actually had a customer come in and USE Starsucks language on me to order a stupid cup of coffee. I'm like..."Grande? I don't speak Starsucks. Would you like small, medium, or large? It's much easier this way." And how can you copyright Vienti, the Italian word for 20?!?!?! That's like me copyrighting the word "THE" and then sueing the crap out of everyone.

*****Update********** Sometime in the Very early moring of 4-28-04 a new Starbucks at the location of 20th & SE Division in Portland, Oregon USA pior to the Grand opening was firebombed and vandalized by angry protesters. A lot of the people in this community do not want to see it overrun by Corporations such as Starbucks. Lotus, to answer your question, putthese three words in your search window " Howard Shultz israel" and you will have an endless supply of articles on this subject. P.S> are you in France?

i\'m on my way to a three year working anniversary with the Bucks; and i wish i handn\'t said that because now i\'m really depressed. Anyway, i have witnessed some striking changes the company has endorsed in the past few months effecting the partners in a large way and myself specifically. The labor practices, namely, are in question as a high rate of production and the volume and speed of each transaction is emphasized. Frankly i feel like i work in an assembly line or a aromatic, dolled-up sweat shop. It seems that starbucks is incorporating what business historian Al Chandler reguards as \"throughput\" or a mass production system and it has compromised the needs of the partners. In my experience, this newly organized facilitation or \"deployment\" demands more production and less partners on the floor making the shift stressful and perpetually understaffed. I myself have experienced physical exhaustion after a shift of heeding to these new procedures with my wrists and arms hurting constantly. most other partners think the benefits and stock options weigh out all this other crap but the provider i\'ve been given put me in a situation with a non-native english speaking dentist who offered to extract my wisdom teeth at that time! skrew that. This company is on its way to replacing the golden arches.

Did you know that Starbucks raises are in the DM's hands? Each District Manager has the say in how much Partners in their district get. My DM decided that 25 cents every 6 months was max. Also told each manager that "Nobody is worth the whole 25 cents because there is no such thing as a perfect partner". What a load of crap!! This is what we bust our butt's for? How many years would it take to make decent money at Starbucks? Starting at $6.75, with less than 25 cent raise every 6 months....You do the math. No thanks!! Starbucks isn't what they claim to be. Don't even bother working for them.. they don't appreciate you or their customers. I found out the hard way and waisted 2 years of my life with that company.

To AudreyTwo: As a former starving student please know that you do have self-respect merely by the fact that you are working to support yourself and pay your tuition and living expenses. Sometimes we don't have the luxery of being picky about the employer we have chosen to "slave" for, but that in no way denies your self-respect or who you are as a person. I admire the fact that you are actually responsible enough to want to work and educate yourself for bigger and better things! Kudos to you!!!!

Lotus: There are communities in the US who really do appreciate coffee, real coffee, and its traditions. Starbucks just doesn't happen to be one of those communities. I know a lot of people here, in the US, who could tell you about the perfect roast, the perfect pull for shot of espresso, and the correct way to steam milk. I wish more people here understood what they were really buying from Starbucks. I don't even think that some of the people I work with understand that buying coffee there IS like buying french fries from McD's, and it's disgusting (my manager, who has worked there for two years did not know what a ristretto shot was). I am ashamed to work for this company. I only did it to pay rent. But even a starving student should have self respect, and that is why I am happy to say I am leaving this company behind! I am returning to a coffee shop that has integrity and respects the traditional way to make espresso.

Okay, I just tried Starbucks 100% Kona at the store in Valencia Northpark. They even did a fresh batch with the french press for samples. They almost didn't brew it, but I convinced them. I asked them if I could see the beans, and they told me that it comes preground for the french press. Whoever the genius was that decided to preground the coffee for the french press should be fired. Anyway, just by smelling the coffee prior to brewing and after along with the taste, there is no question that the 100% Kona is burnt. The packaging in the little paper bag did it little justice too. You should also read the little propoganda on the bag about how all the "experts" agree that they had to share this treasure with everyone. If there coffee was as good as their marketing, I would go there everyday, but no can do. Their greed and lack of cumstomer service will be the downfall.

hello PETER, I was searching for some information about Starbucks on the internet because I'm making a project about globalisation. And then i saw this website.. I'm a girl from Europe, and i just wanted to tell you that we don't hate the US-citizens, we just dont like your president. But how can you say that Schultz is a supporter of Israels terrorism campaign on the Palestinean people? Where did you get that information? In my opinion, Starbucks is just like MacDonalds.. Some people like it, some people don't. I think that you guys in the US dont have such thing as a coffee tradition and I think that's the reason why it was so easy for Starbucks to expand. Were I live we already have cosy coffeeshops for many years.. maybe that's why they dont open coffee shops here and keep on expanding in the US?

Ever wonder why all Starbucks coffee taste so strong and bitter? Most all of their coffee blends are the same beans just put in different proportions (1/2 this, 1/2 that and lets make this one 1/4 this, 3/4 that!)and stamped with a different name (lets call this one Italian Roast!) Great! You get a 13 cent raise for all that hard work!!! What a joke!

This is just terrible. Ive been working for a new Starbucks store for almost 2 months and the conditions are TERRIBLE. Our back room and our bins are SURROUNDED by fruit flies i have been swallowing them everyday. How bad is that? What kind of company allows their workers to be inundated with fruit flies? This is digusting everytime i change the bins they fly about and go up my nose or in my mouth, and when i walk through the backroom i have to hold my breath. I also had a issue with pay and well ive left 2 messages and Starbucks have never replied, dont even give in to their "gimmick" about "Caring" for their partners, they couldnt give 2 steamin country dumps about their workers. Im proof of that!

I'm a Starbucks "partner". Remember that line from Fight Club, "You are not your job"? It's a good phrase to meditate on while serving up frappuchinos like a mindless drone. I hate Starbucks and the worthless customers so much that I decaf everything. When I work, I consider it D-day, D is for decaf. Oh yeah, by the way, that new exciting strawberries and cream frappuchino has like 800 calories, so suck it up!

I wouldn't say I hate starbucks, but I hate what they represent. A huge globally dominating industry that profits by the exploitation of people. As for the posters that are complaining about labor cutting practices. You shouldn't be suprised by this. It is standard practice know. It is just anotherway of falsely inflating the profits. I have often felt that Starbucks is genetically enginering their beans to produce a higher level of caffeine. I don't have proof yet but I am on it like white on rice and am getting close. Not to my suprise I realized that Starbucks just inserted themselves into a near by Target store. They are everywhere. As if all of this is not a reason to rhink about not drinking these finely brewed cups of exploitation and addiction, The chairmen of Starbucks MR. Howard SHULTZ is a stern supporter of Israels terrorism campaign on the Palestinean people. I wonder how many cents of each cup you drink goes to this cause. Then their are the fair trade questions and labor abuse issues. All in all the reason I Dispise Starbucks is because of what they represent. A prime example of why people all over the world hate us. We spend our money on items without caring to know where it goes or how it effects people. Boycott Starbucks, support small business and improve Americas image and lifestyle.

here's a nugget of joy from my SB experience... when i was fired, i wa taken off the schedule and never notified. i arrived @ half an hour before my shift (as usual) to check with every one, see if i was needed early, and to have a drink. i looked at the thing, saw my name crossed off, and looked over to my SM. She looked at me, scared. (why she was affraid of me i'll never know...) so i left. I never asked why then, and to this day don't, as I was assured that i would be "VERY DISTURBED" by the answer i would recieve. Since then, i have gone back on a regular, to take advantage of free drinks (most of the partners still like me) and bull sh*t with my old mates. One day, on a lark, i asked to see the stares snap shots... and then I was REALY P*SSED OFF. I had scred perfect on EVERY ONE! The customers loved me, i did my job well, never called in sick, and did every thing i was asked or told. I was out going, personable, and dependable, and did a d*mn fine job of creating the fabled "3rd Place". For this I was canned. See ya' on tha' street, Bah-Ruthahs!

The heck is this thing about speedy service at Starbucks? What happened to the 3rd place? It's like we are serving "generic" drinks made extra fast at the press of a button! No time to relax and enjoy the experience! ;)

I started working for SB in July of 2003. Well, yesterday I called it quits and hung up the green apron of opportunity. After a frantic day of dealing with the rude and obnoxious public who were lined up around the block, not to mention the temper tantrums of the shift supervisor, my sense of loyalty to my employer went out the front door ahead of me! First, I am not your 20-something employee. I am 56 years young, so this is not my first job, okay?? I recently retired from my 'real job' where I was making well over $100,000 a year -- so I am not a novice in the work field. Second, to be supervised by someone who can't even get to work on time, let alone tell time, is an insult beyond words. But, I listened and learned from my 20 something shift supervisors, assistant manager and manager. I took the written warning for failing to complete my cafe walk, and with a smile. When no one else was able to figure out that the bundles of plastic bags filled with trash needed to be taken to the dumpster, I put on my coat and walked the trash to the dumpster, without a gripe or complaint. As spills occurred I cleaned up immediately and continued to stock shelves, refrigerators, etc. All for a mere $6.75 an hour!! When someone needed to change a shift for a "party" or something, I was the first one to be called, and I would fill in without hesitation. Call it work ethic or stupidity -- I'm not sure which one dominated. The event that broke the camel's back: No one seems to care! If I ignore it it will go away or someone else will certainly do it. Like I said earlier, I have been around the block too many times to develop such an attitude. So, fare thee well, SB. There are some very good employees at the store, but be sure that they will soon come to realize what is really going on and they too shall hang up the apron of opportunity! Fruit flies, anyone and bacteria ridden milk, anyone?????
