dear john, bonuses for store managers are calculated the same in every state. 80% is based on your store's actual sales vs. budget, which is often over-inflated and unobtainable due to canibalization. the other 20% is how well you manage your store's expenses, otherwise known as controllable contribution. what a store manager contributes to the bottom line that is controllable, like labor, as a percentage is budgeted by people in seattle who couldn't run a store to save their lives. in prior years, bonuses were equally based on customer service, labor, sales and profit and was obtainable as you had to acheive 80% of your goal. now one must obtain 100% of budgeted sales to even see a decent bonus and many managers can't do it. i've never seen so many managers not make bonus before. the company has changed drastically. it once was good and all about people. now it's about the dollar. i've witnessed this with my own eyes.

i've been with sb abotu 1/2 a year now. all the upright, wonderful, caring, honorable codes dazzled me. they used terms like star skills, and self-confidence, making progress, and such. tonite i found out that i got fired three weeks ago. reason? thats yet to be foudn out. this was my first job ever, and back then i was a blind slave of starbucks propaganda. ever since my store got this new manager, i dont know what it was about me or its just her. the moment her and i met, she hated me. constantly picking on me with the anal-est things that was never a problem before with my previous manager. thats not all, her constant condesending, attempts to poke fun of me type sort of way in which she talks to me.. i tried everytime to laugh it off and not let it get to me. not many people in my store likes her, in fact all except one due to how anal she is. she kinda sensed it guess and that when she started to single me out and tried to "get the store on her side" with my fire-y temper i knew i was an easy target. and thats when i found out she was actually spreading gossip about me. what the heck? where is the leadership skills, why the two-facedness? i'm a 19 year old (and i would like to think i'm a ) clean, kinda cute (or at least when i'm nto angry), straight up honest asian girl. most semi-intelligent (and up) customers loves me. i was great at what i did, prolly top 3 fastest and cleanest baristas in the store. knows just about every strange and not so strange facts about starbucks there is to know. supervisors and the previous manager liked me a lot. so when this new manager started to tlak random shit about me i was immeadly informed. 3 weeks ago i got a new job and changed my hours and that was the last time i ever worked. since she didnt give me anymore hours, one of my friends offered me some of his hours and got in trouble with the manager, and today, 3 weeks later, i got a check for my payed vacation hours. and that how i found out i was fired. this is what happens to a starbucks employee when she gives all shes got to a job she loved. her fat redneck, tatoo covered, under-educated manager get jealous and she gets fired.

Weird things are happening at the SBUX where I work at... Grande cups are shrinking, the prices are spanding! The Espresso shots and syrups are getting more diluted with water! More Missed Meal Violations are written as end of the day lunches! More "mediocre" partners are being employed! And the weirdest thing of all is(and it's happening quite very often under the same exact circumstances) if the store manager doesn't like a partner(whether a good or bad partner) on the day least expected, the partner's cash register comes out short for exactly $20 or multiples of 20, and an "instant write up" is then delivered! Then, the very next day, the manager walks in sporting new accessories, as if displaying triumph over the "poor naive mind" that was manipulated into signing a "fake confession of wrong doing"! VERY VERY MYSTERIOUS!!!

I was in Shanghai a few months ago, i found a Starbucks in a nearby shopping mall. Couldnt stop myself having 1 (after a few weeks of the local food, i just needed some junk). You would think that in a country that sells a large bottle of Budweiser for about 50 pence that the coffee was going to be cheap. No such luck, i had to pay about 50rmb for a coffee. Ok, thats no prob for me being a westerner - but when i got back to the place i was working down the road i couldnt help but feel guilty as that is over a days wage for the people i worked with. How can a company do that? It'd be like a starbucks selling a drink here in uk for £60. Ethical it aint!

Rat Scabies - You will find your pay rate difference in the human resources book near the end. Or call your human resource manager directly and don't let them off the phone. And By the way, get out while you still can.

Never been to a starbucks, never will go to a starbucks, and for that matter never will have coffee. Starbucks is like the kid you new in middle school who found new friends in high school, but will still ask to party at your house when your parents aren't at home. And then Starbucks will throw up on the couch in you're living room, then when you kick Starbucks out the next week people will forgive Starbucks and invite Starbucks to their house. AND POEPLE DON'T GET IT!!! Starbucks is not your friend, if you're going out with a hot girl and leave her alone Starbucks will try to steal her while your cleaning up Starbucks puke. You get angry. You egg Starbucks house on Halloween. Starbucks finds out it's you. Starbucks key's your car. You knew it was Starbucks. You get angry. You buy a gun. You promise to only to use it for protection... You pray for the right moment to break you're promise. You're still angry. Die, Starbucks, Die!

Hello everybody. Has anyone ever been to a starbucks partner forum. I am going to mines soon and was wondering what goes on at the forum. It is a whole day event. Will I be missing anything if I go when the event is half way through? Is this event even worth going to? I'd really appreciate it if some partners out there share their thoughts on this forum about this. Thanks!

Rat Scabies, you won't get an answer from h.r. you'll get transferred as a barista or a ss. your safest bet is to transfer as a barista while you look for a fulltime job in the new state.

I hate Starbucks, too. I avoid them and make a point of going to small, independently-owned coffee shops in my area. Starbucks = the Wal-Mart of coffee.

G\'day from New Zealand! It is not just in the USA. Auckland city is sprouting Starbucks like rabbits. 7 years ago, there were none down Queen St (which is about 1km long). Now I can think of about 6 or 7! What is it with them? Can people not walk 200 yards without needing another caffeine fix? What is it with this vexing chain? The next step is to take over the existing coffee shops.

Two weeks ago i was told that I was the best Shift supervisor in the district...yesterday I received a 12cent raise. I have been with this "company" for almost three years and I look back now on how hard I work everyday I walk into that place and slap on the apron and wonder what kind of raise does the idiot standing next to me get if I'm the best and get a whole 12 cents. 12 cents, I got a 12 cent raise. I have to say it just one more time because I'm kinda in disbelief, 12 cents! I wonder how howard schultz would handle a 12 cent raise.

I have recently started working at starbucks and if there's anything i notice- it's that people have NO self-control. People have cravings for coffee and pastries- and on auto-pilot, they automatically head to starbucks. Why not resist the temptation to buy over-priced mediocre coffee and factory-made pastries? I cannot for the life of me relate to these idiot customers. Second point: Starbucks has now issued the Starbucks Card. Why would anybody want to reload cash value into these cards? Do they NOT know that the reason why starbucks wants the money in advanced is because they want to put that money in the bank so they can make money off the interest? Nothing extra is given to the customer for using the starbucks card- NOTHING! Even if incentives are added to the card- starbucks is still profiting from those cards. Third point: FRAPPUCINOS. I have waaay too many kids coming in asking for frapps. Kid: can i have a frapp. Me: NO, you are underaged. too bad i can't say this at work- no, i'll wait till the last day of work. Caffeine is addictive. It would be nice if i can start carding them. Of course, this is starbuck's way of hooking the young. Ahhh- but they have 'kid' drinks like apple cidre and hot cocoa- you must think. Think again mon amie. I had a grande hot chocolate at work and felt like I was about to jump out of my own skin. More points to come.

I'm fine with bashing Starbucks, but Scott, at least get your facts straight. Starbucks DOES NOT own Coffee People, they own Seattle's Best. Stores are required to clean steam wands, coffee carafes, etc... or be fired. Chai is double strength and you can ask for it without water. Steaming un-diluted eggnog is gross and way too thick. I hate Starbucks too, but come on-get it right!

Hi -- I'm a disgruntled store manager for SBUX who has to make a tough decision soon. I have to move to Reno later this year for personal reasons. I can't seem to get a straight answer from anyone in HR (of course), about how much I would be making as a store manager in Reno. I'd like to quit for all the usual, obvious reasons, but with the job market being this tight I don't think I can afford to right now. On the other hand, if I have to take a pay cut I might as well go on unemployment... Anyway, can anyone tell me how much store managers are currently making in Nevada? Even if you're in Vegas or central California? Just so I can get a rough idea... Thanks!

Greetings! In high school I worked at an independent coffee house and now I'm the manager of a Jumpin' Juice and Java. I would just like to state how SICK AND TIRED I am of hearing people asking "Do you have anything like Starbucks?" My reply, "Yes! If you would like me to make you some extremely bitter espresso blended with chunks of ice that has been made with premium unfiltered water--Why I'd LOVE to!" Can't people ever think outside the box? You say Starsucks, as I prefer to call it, is so popular because they sell good coffee. NO! It's because they're EVERYWHERE! People have no choice. Small coffee houses who actually make the good stuff can't afford mass advertisement or pop a store in every Krogers and on every interstate junction. People see Starsucks, and they think that's the only place they can get coffee from. PLEASE PEOPLE! Think about your tastebuds for a change. You're becoming used to over roasted coffee that is giving your mouth nothing but a bitter taste. And where's the love in making your drinks? All baristas at Starbucks do is push a button, and it comes out. They don't even deserve the right to be called a barista! I mean...really now...does Starsucks actually train their employees on fat molecules, refreshing milk, or the tap and swirl technique to get good froth? NOOOOO!!! Now our town has a Starsucks in Krogers and life is going to hell. Thank God not all of our town's residents are narrow minded and have learned that there's other coffee houses out there that can serve them better. C'mon! A Starsucks in Krogers? Give me a BREAK!

Hi again. In response to "new employee" who suggests that Howard is the reincarntion of Hitler, I think its not just Howard or the guys at Enron or Tyco, its any corporate exec. A few months ago, Forbes.com reported that Starbuck's CEO, Orin Smith, is in the top 10 money earners. What they didn't mention was that Howard, who stepped down from CEO to become Chief Global Strategist- whatever the hell that is, takes the same amount out of the company. So as of last years totals, that is 52 million total for the two top execs. So the CEO is in the top ten money earners, but the company ranks #425 on the Fortune 500 earnings list. http://www.fortune.com/fortune/subs/fortune500/top500/0,19719,401,00.html Shouldn't the CEO earnings commensurate with the companys earnings and profits? Or am I just being reasonable?

Does anyone here actually like working at SBX? I was always lead to believe that working at SBX is more professional than other places. I have read through about 20 of the pages on here, and its amazing all the stuff that happens. Personally, I have never entered a SBX in my life - mainly because they are too expensive and I'm poor, but also i have a small coffee house i go to regularly and i'd much rather give back to their local buisness than some big company. I had no idea employees were treated so bad. I agree with what i read about SBX destroying coffee with all the flavours and crap they add to their drinks. I live in Sydney, and there has to be at least 10 SBX in the CBD within a 3km radius. It's crazy. I think it's pathetic, that people think they are some how higher up in the social ladder if they drink or eat (the crap) at SBX. It's SBX just like the McDonald's of fast food? Why do people keep going there? I don't understand it. Why do they buy those drinks with all that sugar and those slices which are really bad for you. I'm guessing if you got a large drink (or whatever the **** SBX call it) plus a slice it would total almost the daily calorie allowance of a person, and some people have that as a snack. WTF!!! Oh yeah, this site is cool - it reminds me of McSpotlight. You should create pages with info on how SBX exploits 3rd world countries for their coffee and on working conditions and pay. I do feel sorry though for the people that work there, I have been in your situation, where i needed a job and had to put up with hell cause i needed the money. I could never treat anyone who works at one of those places with anything but niceness as i know what goes on in some places and feel sorry for you guys.

i gave up being a robot about 4 months ago. i had worked for starbucks for over seven years. in the begining it was fun, then as the years passed and the frappuccino gained momentum i lost all sight of who i was and what kind of monster i was working for. i began finding it relatively easy to start rolling my eyes in front of customers as the word frappuccino came from their mouths. i began finding it even easier to want to slap my district manager in the face when she would give me the look that my store wasnt up to cookie cutter standards. i began my so called life at starbucks in california then moved to portland and i would have to suggest if their is anyone in that city that goes to starbucks. please stop...for the love of independant coffee outfitters. starbucks stores are so filthy i was embarrassed by selling anything. let alone charging someone 3+ bucks for their starbucks. leaving that place was the best thing i have ever done for myself. i dont even care that i am broke as hell. as long as i dont have to encounter another green apron again.

We have just had a documentary aired about starbucks. I've hated them for a long time now for damn nearly all of the reasons but tonight I got to hear a billionaire tell me of his social responsibilities!! This made me sick. By the proud admission of the CEO in the last 10 years starbucks gave $2mil to help underprivelaged coffee growers worldwide, yes 2 out of 800mil profits went back to the nations that they rape. Furthermore starbucks CEO agrees that the povery in theses areas is not acceptable and is, in some part, due to 'free trade'. He now purchases a huge 1% of his coffee from fair trade growers and offers it in some shops. Wow not a stone hearted accumulator of things after all. Literally almost brings a tear to the eye.

17000 more Starbucks!?! Howard and Orin just don't know when to stop. For those of you that remember Penguins Yogurt and where they are now. Starbuck's could be headed down that same road by spreading itself too thin too fast. Not a bad thought, but it's all the inbetween stuff as they expand.
