I am against the outrageous prices of Starbucks, and how they are popping up on every street corner and causing the small, local coffee shops to close down. Sad

To answer Mike's question. Assistant Store Managers work like dogs, non-stop. It looks a lot easier from outside than what it actually is. Above all, you have to put up with a lot of crap and they don't pay you enough to do this. The employee's turn over is very high and you have to constantly hire and train new people. Don't let their happy, cheerful attitude fool you, it is a job requirement and most of them would jump on a better oppotunity if it comes along. All the noise about benefits is just a bunch of well orchestrated PR campaign lies. Stay away and you will be better off.

I am contemplating going to work as an Assistant Store Manager for Starbucks and would like some honest, construct feedback (positive and negative) from former or current Starbucks employees especially managers. I want to be confident about my decision and need to know all the facts good or bad. Thanks.

Hello. Another disgruntled Barista here. I'd like to share with everyone a few nice little discoveries I made in my store the other day. 1- Our crumb cake had meal worms in it. 2- The pinapple passion cakes had mold growing on the bottom sides of them. and 3 - I opened a box of soy milk to discover... soy cottage cheese. Yeah.. I don't know if this is a consistanr thing in other stores, but my store doesn't seem to care about freshness. Another thing I'd like to share. When I first started working there, the manager put my name in the computer backwards. It's slightly annoying so I asked her to change it. Five months later, after umpteen billion excuses, it's still backwards. She also decided one day to change my hours without informing me, so I went to leave at 3 and the ASM was like "No, see, someone crossed out 3 and wrote in 5 here." She does that sort of thing often, to a lot of people. I really despise working there. The pay sucks and is not worth the bull you have to put up with. I'm at my breaking point and and contemplating when to quit.

They are the McDonalds of coffee. They represent all that is fake and bland. If you are bland as a person, and love burnt tasting "coffee", then get in line - you mindless lemmings.

Well soon all there will be in Portland is Starbucks, and I'm mad as can be. I live across the street from a Starbucks but drive down the road (passing 2 more Starbucks) to get to my favorite Coffee People store. Now Starbucks has bought them too. What does it take for the FTC to start looking into monopolistic behaviors on the part of a big company like this? It's bad enough that I can't get my preferred whole bean coffee anymore (Torrefazione Italia) because they bought them and are phazing them out too. I suppose I'll resort to buying beans over the internet and search for a 'one-off' local kioske that makes an acceptable cup (I've heard the local Kaiser Permanente has a coffee cart in their lobby that is pretty good)...anything but the 'Buck!

I really think that Starbucks puts something into their drinks to addict you and keep you coming back. I am especially fond of caramel macciato's. I get coffee and lattes from other places and they just don't seem to satisfy me and keep me coming back like theirs do. I am really becoming suspicious. Does anybody that has worked there know if they hear a lot of people say the same thing as I do or is it just in my head? I quit smoking and now I'm spending more on macciato's than I did on cigarettes. I'm going to try and kick the habit soon - I'm starting to hate Starbucks!

Starbucks has done for us what Microsoft did. Mass marketed an inferior product. How sad that the vast majority of people think that's how an espressor should be made - scalded milk, no foam and burnt coffee.

And to Lisa from Portland below my post, I feel your pain. Seems like the evil empire is looking to get their hands on all the good coffee these days! I know the Torrefazione/Seattle's Best/Starbucks merger went through a while ago (like a year ago) but it still angers me that I can't go home to Seattle (I live in NY now) and find a cafe and hang out and have a cup of their awesome coffee. In a way, this reminds me of how Estee Lauder has bought out the majority of the makeup world and the companies they bought out have suffered as a result. MAC used to be a much better company, they were more customer and teaching-oriented and now they just care about making sales, to hell if they show you how to use it. Really sad...

Oh how I hate Starbucks. They bought out my favorite coffee company, Torrefazione, and decided to shut down all of their cafes and instead focus on selling the brand in stores and online. Idiots. Don't they know that Torrefazione is a far superior product to the burnt-tire tasting crap that the baristas serve at Starbucks? Where am I supposed to go when I go home to Seattle now?!! WAAAAAAAHHHH. They are evil!

I can't stand the customers who order a "Sugar-Free-Vanilla, Non-Fat, light caramel, caramel macchitto..and then ask for whipped cream and a pastry. Or even better ~ adding whipped cream for a Frappuchino Light. GEEZ!

I heard sad news that my favorite coffee shop is being put out by starbucks. Starbucks is buying out the leases for all Portland location Coffee People. This makes me very sad as I love their coffee, especially love the Black TIger shake. I do believe the competition was getting to be to much for SB's here in PDX so they went the woosy way and instead of improving their own product, (ie, stop burning your coffee!)and took out the little guy instead. I will no longer buy from SB's. I will miss you "Coffee People".

Buy local. Support local. Starbucks coffee is, at best, generic garbage. Hats off to Starbucks, though, if you can get people to pay $5.75 for a cup of generic coffee...more power to them.

I personally don't drink starbucks I would like to comment on the owner Mr shultz. Howard shultz bought the seattle supersonics and less than 4 years later he decides to sell the team and have them move out of seattle. i've lived here all my life and have gone to games since I was 5 so here comes a millionare buys the team and dumps them just to make a buck. I have never seen a city (fans) get screwed like that before. Don't you have enough money why get involved in something you know nothing about. Either stick to coffee or do us all a favor and get out. Take your money and get out.

Christina: they have to pay you for hours you worked even if this is Starbucks! Just don't be shy about calling them and asking when it was mailed, or if they are holding it for you. You have some basic rights regardless of whether you gave notice. Go get 'em!

I think that Starbucks is called starbucks because you need to be a star to afford it all the time. the prices are so ridiculous. i only like one thing there and it is like 4 bucks so i dont buy it. also it is for stars because they put so much crap in their coffee that you have to have like a personal trainer to work it off! its crazy. For normal people, starbucks is just not normal. GO TO DUNKIN' DONUTS!!!... when i was in spain i had to search for a dunkin donuts because all there was was starbucks and i was not going there. i would rather spend five dollars somewhere else in spain.

I recently picked up a bottle of water at a Starbucks in Atanta. It said something like buying this water will help provide clean watert to those people who don't have any. I asked the manager while holding the bottle of water "you could start by sending them this". I was told that my "sarcasim" was "not appreciated"

Never thought it would come to this...I was an RMT for about 6 weeks and was recently "separated". I was an external hire and the training was a joke. Some of the classes were cool, but the rest was crap! And I agree with Baburista in the fake "star skills" and the crap that they try to brainwash you with. I will admit that I made some mistakes, but I didn't fail them, they failed me. I will be soooo much better off in the long run... I was getting so freeking sick of the fake, cliquish bull that made you feel like if you weren't one of the "cool kids" you were doo doo. Thank God I wasn't a good fit... who wants to fit it with that bunch. I remember someone here commenting on that Bux "embraces diversity" and yet you cannot be yourself... no visible tats, no hair color that isn't natural... hell, they don't even like for you to have a bad day! Get over yourselves... bite me!

Only losers define themselves through the coffee they drink. But what makes matters worse is why would anyone care? I feel for the people that work for them tho, it seems as our societies shift to a service based economy, wages and work conditions keep dropping. Somewhere there has to be a middle ground. Screw the corporations, go support the independents! Coffee is coffee, there is no need to dress it up...
